Air India will operate a special relief flight today to bring back 228 passengers stranded in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, after their San Francisco–Delhi flight was diverted on Monday due to a technical issue. The relief aircraft is expected to return to Delhi on Wednesday morning, the airline confirmed.
The diverted flight, AI174, carrying 245 people including 17 crew members, made a precautionary landing in Ulaanbaatar after the crew suspected a technical problem midair. The Boeing 777 landed safely, officials said.
In a statement, the airline announced, “Air India will be operating a relief flight to ferry the passengers of flight AI174 (San Francisco–Delhi of 02 November), which was diverted to Ulaanbaatar on Monday. The ferry flight AI183 is scheduled to depart Delhi this afternoon and return with the affected passengers on Wednesday morning.”
The relief operation will be conducted using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Air India said that in coordination with local authorities and the Indian Embassy in Mongolia, arrangements have been made to accommodate and assist passengers and crew during their stay.
On Monday, the Tata Group-owned carrier said, “AI174 operating from San Francisco to Delhi via Kolkata, made a precautionary landing at Ulaanbaatar after the flight crew suspected a technical issue en route.”
The airline assured that the aircraft landed safely and all passengers were being looked after until their return flight to India.
