Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, will arrive in Guwahati on Friday to pay tribute to the late singer Zubeen Garg. The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) said Gandhi will arrive in Guwahati and proceed to Sonapur, on the city outskirts, where Garg has been laid to rest. He will offer floral tributes and later visit the late singer's residence to meet the bereaved family.
Meanwhile, the Baksa region continues to be restive following clashes between a mob and the police when the five accused in Garg's death case were taken to Baksa district jail at Mushalpur.
A notification issued by the Assam Police headquarters stated that they have cancelled all the leaves of its personnel, including previously approved leaves, except in emergency cases like on medical grounds, considering the law and order situation in Baksa district. The government has also suspended mobile internet and data services and imposed prohibitory orders.
Thousands of people had come out on the streets and pelted stones at the high security convoy carrying the five accused, including North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg's manager Siddhartha Sharma, Zubeen's cousin Sandipan Garg and two PSOs of Garg - Nandreswar Bora and Paresh Baishya.
Assam police tried to shift the five accused to the newly inaugurated district jail in Baksa, as per court orders. However, people opposed the move to shift the five accused to Baksa jail. Police had to resort to lathi charge and, later, it was forced to fire to disperse the crowd.
Over 30 people, including policemen, were injured in the stone pelting. The government later rushed the Rapid Action Force and additional forces from other districts to Baksa to control the situation. Police have detained 10 people in connection with the violence.
Assam's Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia on Thursday lodged a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission regarding the Baksa incident.
In his complaint, Saikia said the protest was part of the emotional " Justice for Zubeen Garg" movement. Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X, "Another step forward towards justice for our beloved Zubeen. Singapore Police authorities will meet the Assam Police team, led by Munna Gupta, ADGP and head of SIT, on October 21. Our team will travel to Singapore on October 20 accordingly. Our collective resolve remains - Justice for Zubeen will prevail."
