In an unusual workplace incident, a company’s CEO and around 300 employees were mistakenly sent emails indicating that their employment had been terminated, causing widespread panic and confusion across the organization. The message included the alarming statement: “Your last working day is effective immediately.” The unexpected emails left staff scrambling to confirm their employment status and prompted urgent clarifications from the company’s IT and HR departments.

The incident shared on Reddit described how the HR team was testing a new offboarding automation tool. The post explained that someone forgot to switch the system from test mode to live mode, resulting in real employees receiving the termination notifications. The post noted that the company’s Slack channel quickly filled with messages from shocked employees. One manager asked, “Should I start packing?” while IT intervened with an all-caps message clarifying, “NO ONE IS FIRED. PLEASE DO NOT TURN IN YOUR BADGES.”

Reddit Reacts

One user remarked on the absurdity of the situation, noting, “That one guy who just thumbs it up was like, ‘damn well ok, guess I’m fired.’” Another user simply wrote, “FINALLY!” while a third reflected on worker protections in some countries, describing such an unexpected notice as a potential blessing: “I wanted to quit my company and then right at the right time they let me know I was going to be made redundant, so I'd get 3 months of pay and could stop working straight away. It was great!”

Other Reddit commenters reflected on personal experiences with sudden job losses. A user said, “the last time I got fired I just said 'have fun!' then went and packed up my desk and walked out,” highlighting how employees sometimes react nonchalantly to abrupt terminations. Another user noted the potential implications of the automated system, stating, “Yeah-- this is incredibly destabilizing. They're testing out software to automate layoffs,” emphasizing the concern that some employees may have about the future.
