Recently, Dr. Joseph Salhab, known as thestomachdoc on social media, shared a simple home remedy to get relief from constipation. He shared a video on Instagram and explained how to do abdominal massage to get relief from constipation.
How can abdominal massage help relieve constipation?
According to Dr. Salhab, gentle abdominal massage helps increase intestinal movement, making bowel movements easier. He also explained how to do it: first, lie on your back. Then, bend your knees and rest your feet on the bed. Relax your abdominal muscles. Gently massage your lower right side. Then, move up, to the left, and back down, making circular movements on your abdomen. Continue this process for about 5 minutes.
Sacral Inhibition Technique
He also recommends a technique called sacral inhibition. This involves applying gentle pressure to the lower back, the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of the spine). This technique may sound medical, but it's quite simple and is often used in osteopathic and physiotherapy settings. According to Dr. Salhab, the sacrum is connected to the body's nervous system, especially the parasympathetic nerves, which influence digestion, bladder control, and relaxation. When gentle pressure is applied to this area, it calms the imbalanced nerve signals, similar to pressing the body's relax button.
This technique not only helps with constipation but also with pelvic tension, urinary problems, and straining. It is also used for stomach problems in children and various other health issues in adults. Its greatest advantage is that it is completely safe, drug-free, and deeply relaxing.
