Illawarra Hawks’ star import and three-time NBA champion **JaVale McGee** delivered a statement game — and a sharp response — after guiding his team to a remarkable 107–93 win over defending champions **Melbourne United** in a heated NBL Finals rematch.
In a powerful all-around display, McGee dominated both ends of the court, putting up **37 points and 14 rebounds** — his **eighth double-double** of the season — and leading the Hawks to one of the biggest upsets of the year.
Despite pre-season concerns about whether the 37-year-old could cope with the **high-speed tempo** of the NBL given his age and past health issues, McGee has silenced critics. Through nine games, he’s averaging **26.1 minutes per game**, ranking fifth among league centres.
When asked post-game if he was struggling to keep up with the team’s pace, McGee’s response was blunt yet confident.
“Why would you ask me that?” he shot back, drawing laughter from head coach Justin Tatum.
“Do I not perform in full court? That’s your imagination, not mine. My age doesn’t limit me — I’m fine in both full and half court play.”
Head coach **Justin Tatum**, who has repeatedly backed McGee amid officiating frustrations this season, commended his player’s resilience and leadership.
“I’m glad the referees finally recognised the level of physicality he faces,” Tatum said. “He got the calls he deserved and even when he didn’t, he kept fighting. Today, he truly thrived.”
Entering the game, McGee had only seven free-throw attempts all season — a number Tatum had previously criticised. Against Melbourne, however, McGee made **11 trips to the line**, converting efficiently and dominating the paint.
With consistent performances and leadership on both ends, McGee has now emerged as not just the Hawks’ anchor but also a **strong MVP contender** in the 2025–26 NBL season.
