Sir Keir Starmer faced a brutal first question during a grilling with the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg. The BBC presenter began the interview on the first day of Labour's party conference in Liverpool by asking: "How much trouble are you in?"
Sir Keir said: "Well we've got a lot of hard work to do. We've achieved great things in the first year of the Labour Government."
"There's a lot we've achieved but we've got to do more. We inherited a complete mess, a broken economy, broken public services.
"We said we would change that and I always said that would take time but I do understand people are frustrated because if they lived through 14 years of failure they want change to come more quickly."
